Ikkat is a buzz word among many of weaves across India. In this blog we concentrate on Pochampally Ikkat.

Pochampally is part of Nalgonda district in Telangana near to capital city Hyderabad.  The cluster of 80 villages around Pochampally follow these weaving practices. Ikkat sarees come in different fabrics like cotton, cotton silk and  pure silk.

Other than sarees there are many products available here. They are cotton fabrics, silk fabrics, cotton or silk duppattas, Lehangas, bed sheets etc.

The weaving follows a particular way of weaving.  The yarn for the warp and weft is wrapped to wrapping blocks and later divided into different sets and dyed.  The  dyeing process is similar to tie and dye process. The yarn is dyed before weaving the fabric. The dyeing process happens several times to dye the fabric as required.

These sarees comes in simple and geometric designs and bright colors. The quality of Ikkat sarees is high and very much demand among handloom lovers.

These sarees comes in different types of weaves as single weave and double weave. Single weave comes with one way thread weaving and as name represents double weave comes with two way weaving.

The uniqueness of these sarees lies in the transfer of design onto warp and weft before weaving.

Not only sarees in Ikkat, fabric also widely used by designers for making traditional dresses, blouses, kurtis etc.
