Maheswari handlooms:

Along the ghats of Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh, the town Maheswar creates beautiful and eye catching Mahesawari saris in cotton, Cotton silk and silk.

In 18th century, Malwa queen Ahilyabai created her own design in beautiful textile Maheswari and later this textile got world attention for its light weight and easy maintenance.

The Maheswari sari comes with unique designs and motifs inspired by local architecture and stripes in pallu. It looks simple and graceful, but still looks so elegant and sophisticated.

Fine cotton and silks are used in Maheswari saris. If it cotton silk sari, then fine cotton yarns used in its weft and silk in its warp. Even though the sari is light in weight, there will be luster of silk

The yarns are dyed before weaving in beautiful and rich colors. The craft is practiced by most of the people in the town irrespective of caste and religion.

Once the dyeing process is done, the silk and cotton are loaded to bobbins and set on looms for weaving. Then the loom is set with patterns and motifs before weaving.

Earlier pure zari and natural colors are used. But now there are many changes due to prices increase of raw materials and heavy competition. Many of them are moving towards tested zari and synthetic color dyeing.

But the fabrics are not lost its demand and importance for its light weight. Now a days, they are creating dress materials as well they are appreciated very well.
